A young computer whiz named David Lightman, played by Matthew Broderick, inadvertently hacks into a U.S. military supercomputer. Mistakenly believing he's just playing a game, David launches a nuclear simulation that nearly escalates into World War III. As the race against time unfolds, David teams up with his friend Jennifer, portrayed by Ally Sheedy, to stop the machine before it triggers a real nuclear catastrophe.
